Type of cancer that affects the external lining of the pleura (lungs) and the peritoneum (lower digestive tract) is called mesothelioma. This type of cancer (mesothelioma cancer) is uncommon and rarely, and a result of anything other than asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma disease has been linked to exposure with dust of asbestos. It is also very difficult to diagnose this type of cancer. Mesothelium tumors can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Most of mesothelial tumors usually malignant mesothelioma. However, this dangerous disease is not very responsive to some kind of therapy.
Malignant mesothelioma symptoms include muscle weakness, abdominal pain, sweating, weight loss, a persistent cough, nausea, fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, pain in the lower back or side of the chest and some sensory loss. Many people misunderstood about the symptoms of this dangerous cancer disease for other common everyday ailments and do not seek treatment immediately. Between first exposure persons to asbestos and the onset of this disease may be anywhere ca. 15 - 60 years. When the symptoms appear for the first time and the cancer is diagnosed, then the disease is often in its advanced level. The most common survival time for the person with mesothelioma cancer is one to two years. If this dangerous type of cancer can be found early enough, almost half of the patients with this dangerous disease reach the two year mark and approximately twenty percent survive for five years ahead. HSE (Health and Safety Executive) publish a statistics regarding work related mesothelioma deaths which happened in the UK, spanning the years 1981 - 2000. The study was published in the last 2003 ago. Highest rates of mesothelioma deaths in men were in West Dumbartonshire, Barrow-in-Furness, Plymouth, Portsmouth and South Tyneside, which those areas were involved in shipbuilding, thus the high incidence of asbestos. Rate for the mortality for mesothelioma related deaths showed higher in men more than in women. The average for women was approximately fifteen percent of the annual deaths due to this dangerous cancer disease. The results for women were considered less reliable but showed the following : the areas with the greatest incidence of women's death included Dagenham and Barking (because of asbestos factories), Blackburn with Darwen (gas masks were manufactured during the war in this region), Sunderland (shipbuilding and manufacturing). |
