|
Mesothelioma cancer is a type of cancer in which the cancerous cells surround the sac lining the chest. It is a malignant cancer and occurs very rarely. The cells may be lining the chest or the abdomen. This may be caused because the patient may have breathed asbestos at his or her work place. If you are suffering from breathing problems such as stinging in the chest, shortness of breath, or aches in the abdomen or any swelling in the abdomen, these can be the mesothelioma cancer symptoms.
If so, you must see your doctor as soon as possible. You may be asked to get your chest or abdomen x-rayed. A special test may be performed with a thoracoscope to determine whether you are suffering from this kind of malignant cancer or not. This instrument will be used to have a look inside the chest cavity. The instrument will be placed between two ribs. This test is performed after the patient is given local anesthethesia. Usually, no pain is caused by this test, although the patient may feel a little pressure. Another test that may be performed in which a tool called the peritoneoscope is used to look inside the abdomen. This test is also performed after giving a patient local anesthesia. If there are any abnormal tissues found, a biopsy is the next step. The first stage of mesothelioma cancer is when abnormal growth is found in the chest cavity near the lungs and heart or in the diaphragm or the lungs. In stage II, the cancer spreads in the chest to the lymph nodes. In stage III, the cancerous growths spread into the center of the chest, heart, chest wall, through the diaphragm, or abdominal lining, and in even worse cases, into nearby lymph nodes. In the final stage [stage four] it spreads in all organs and tissues. Stage IV: Cancer has spread to distant organs or tissues. Malignant mesothelioma cancer can be treated by surgery, radiation therapy or by chemotherapy. |
